Here in thePhilippines, the beverage industry is in a tight battle for market supremacy. To pave their way to greater heights, each one of them has deployed their newest warriors, Cobra for ABI, Sting for Pepsi Cola and Samurai for Coca Cola, on the battle field to be the best carbonated energy drink in the country.
No, these are not Professional WWE wrestlers with silly names or mutant villains from your X-Men comics; these are the actual brand names of energy drinks that are fast becoming main stream here in the country.
Gone are the days when you have to go to a drugstore just to recharge your batteries with good old Red Bull or Lipovitan. There are a new set of bad boys in town that are readily available in your suking sari-sari stores with just a fraction of the price of the old energy drinks. With 10-12 pesos, you can have a refreshing drink and have an energy boost at the same time.
These drinks are available almost everywhere. Just look for a store selling soft drinks and you’ll surely find one or two of these so called energy drinks. They are also available in many bakeries and carinderia.
I think only here can you find people eating their rice meals together with an energy drink as “Panulak”. Talk about carbo loading Field Trippers.
Anyways, I tried drinking these energy drinks in some instances, but I must say, they are almost like soft drinks than they are energy drinks. They taste sweeter than regular soft drinks though. Soft drinks with a kick, no wonder they’ve got such vicious names. Maybe I should invent one also and call it the Kick-a$s Elixir or the Burning Burp!
Cobra Energy drink, the most popular brand has 3 variants, the pioneer and current market leader which is the yellow one, the green one, and the newest, the red variant.
Sting also has 3 flavors, gold, red (Strawberry), and green ( Lime) variants.
Samurai has only one variant (yellow).
Among these energy drinks, I like the String Red the most. It has a fruity flavor and no bitter aftertaste which are commonly found in most energy drinks.
So how about you? What’s your favorite energy drink? Me here are my ratings for these beverage:
My List of the Top Carbonized Energy Drinks in the Philippines
1. Sting Strawberry– sweet with a fruity after taste
2. Cobra Yellow– very sweet with a little bitter after taste
3. Cobra Lime– refreshing, more like Mountain Dew
4. Sting Gold– Sweet
5. Cobra Red– Tastle like Chicklets Cherry back in the day
6. Samurai– most bitter among the all the contestants ( lasang gamot)
7. Sting Lime ( Green) – Looks weird, taste even weirder
Just take notice of their high calorie content, an 8oz bottle of any of these brands may contain as much as 195 calories as compared to 135 calories for a can of Coke. Substances like taurine, ginseng extract, Vitamin B complex and caffeine are added to keep you awake and alert.
Field Trip Boy Update:
Sting Energy Drink has come up with a new product: the Sting Pac Energy Drink with Malungay endorsed by Manny Pacquiao. Haven’t tried it, but I will update this post for my review of this beverage very soon.
