Batanes is the one of the Philippines’ last frontier. It is the Northern most province in the country and one of the most isolated. Extreme weather conditions and rough seas can make traveling to Batanes difficult specially during the rainy seasons.
But with lots of scenic views and wonderful but rugged landscapes, Batanes remains one of the most wanted list of top Filipino tourists.
The fastest way to reach Batanes is via plane. Basco, the provincial capital, has a small airport that can cater to small planes. PAL EXPRESS is the top commercial airline that flies to Batanes regularly. But unlike most of its fleet that consists of airbuses like the A310, the plane of PAL Express for Manila to Basco and vice versa is a propeller plane.
Yes, they utilize a Bombardier Q400 turboprop aircraft. This plane is quite small and can carry 76 passengers at a time. The leg room will not be a problem for most passengers but the over head bin is small and you can barely fit your backpacks and other bulky hand carry luggage.

Our flight was comfortable for the weather was very freindly and even though the runway in Basco is relatively short, the landing was smooth.
The runway is just a few meters away from the Basco Airport building. The main building resembles a hotel or small museum where you can ask some info at the front desk or take some pictures of the various Batanes products and artifacts.
There are no taxis in Batanes. Most common mode of transportation is riding a tricycle or hiring a van. Good news for budget conscious travelers, for the poblacion of Basco is a few blocks away. You can easily reach most Basco hotels by foot from the airport.
