One of the best ways to beat the summer heat is by eating ice cold delights like halo-halo and ice cream. Cille is not a big fan of halo-halo, so even if there is a Chowking branch just a few steps away, we headed out to Marina Mall, Mactan just to have the taste of the newest ice cream bar in the Philippines, the Selecta Magnum.
Selecta Magnum was just launched recently here in the country and is causing a bit of a stir among chocolate and ice cream lovers. I’ve read that the Selecta Magnum is quite popular in some countries, so we just have to try this one out.
Selecta Magnum Classic and Almond Flavors
The Selecta Magnum price is 50 pesos. This is a bit expensive as compared to other ice cream sticks and ice cream cones which are sold at around 10 pesos to 25 pesos each.
The Classic and Almond variants of Selecta Magnum
But you got to hand it to Selecta for these ice cream bars are not just like your locally made ice cream bars. The Selecta Magnum ice cream bar is made in Australia and the chocolate coating is made from Belgian chocolate.
Selecta Magnum Taste Test
Selecta Magnum has 3 variants or flavors: the Classic magnum, the Almond variety and the Chocolate Truffle.
Unlucky for us, only the classic and the almond versions are on sale in SM Savemore Mactan
Cille got the classic Magnum while I took on the Selecta Magnum Almond.
Classic Selecta Magnum
We both agreed that the chocolate coating for these particular imported ice cream bars is good. Taste like real chocolate, plus the layer is a bit thick, making it a little crunchy. There is also a generous amount of almonds in my Magnum. Cille said Magnum’s chocolate layer tastes like Cadbury chocolates.
Selecta Magnum Almond Ice Cream
But the vanilla ice cream is disappointing. It is not too creamy. It is not too sweet as well. For a sweet tooth like me, their vanilla ice cream tastes bland.
After taking a bite
The Selecta Magnum, for me, is just a big hype. It does not live up to the high expectations and the marketing buildup especially that they launched it using celebrity endorsers like Eva Longoria in the US. Solenn Heussaff is the celebrity brand ambassador of Magnum here in the Philippines. I just hope that the Selecta Magnum Chocolate Truffle fairs better than these 2 versions, for I think these 2 are just an expensive version of the our good old Pinipig Crunch.
Will I buy Selecta Magnum again?
Probably not in the near future because of the price, unless it is the Selecta Magnum Chocolate Truffle, which I am still excited to try out.
Where can you buy Selecta Magnum?
The suggested retail price for Selecta Magnum ice cream bar is 50 pesos. But I’ve heard that certain convenience stores sells theirs with a little premium like 7-eleven ( 60 pesos) and Mini Stop (55 pesos).
Selecta Magnum is available in most supermarkets and convenience stores in the Philippines.
