The Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House in the Parian District of Cebu City is probably the most popular, if not the oldest house in this part of town. No clear evidence when the house was actually built, but some experts tell that it was probably built in the year 1675.
The house was originally owned by a Chinese merchant Don Juan Yap and his wife Maria Florido. They have 3 children, Maria, Eleuterio and Concolacion. Maria, the oldest daughter, married the Cabeza de Barangay or Barangay Captain, Don Mariano Sandiego.
Like the many old houses in the Philippines, the Yap-Sandiego Ancestral house displays a unique architectural style popular during Spanish era, the Bahay na Bato. The house has that certain Filipino characteristic just like those old houses found in Intramuros in Manila, Calle Crisologo in the Heritage City of Vigan, and even that of the house of our National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, in Calamba, Laguna.

In the old days, the lower portion of the house was probably used as a Kamalig, or warehouse, while the second floor serves as the living quarters of the owners. Now, the Yap-Sandiego Ancestral house serves as a living monument of a time long past. It houses lots of antique, artifacts, religious images and paintings. There are also a lot of wooden images of the Sto. Nino and other Catholic saints.

Plans are made to make Yap-Sandiego ancestral house an active participant some of Cebu’s important festivals and events such as Sinulog and Christmas. It is said that they are planning to relive the Pastores Christmas tradition in where a group of carolers sings about the birth of Christ, an old school version of the modern carolers.
